Daniel Defoe's account of the Plague in London would be a better read. It's not as sweeping its view of history, but it would be more accurate and less hostile to people of faith.The Hourly History pattern of hostility to faith continues with this book. Most portrayals in this book of the Church or people of faith are not flattering or are presented in a negative light.One of the biggest problems it has is one of bifurcation: it insists on interpreting things as either only of faith or only of medicine. It continually implies it cannot be both. This continues with comments about how things "set the stage" for future history subsequent to the plagues described that it views as subordinating faith.The most obvious mistake in hindsight, during 2020, that this book made was to assume that pandemics are a thing of the past and today are easily brought under control. One wonders if the author would be as ready to condemn the epidemiologists of our day when they are wrong as the author is of the leaders of the day described in this book.
