Amazon's #1 Bestseller in Diet Therapy 20 Straight Months..."I've seen patients use the info in this book and have chronic health issues seem to just 'go away' in the course of days. You can have this power, too."- Garrett L. Smith, NMD CSCS BSEat to raise your metabolic rate and get HOTEat for Heat: The Metabolic Approach to Food and Drink is best described as a complementary concept that has yet to be discussed anywhere in the world of health, diet, and nutrition. The book takes a close look at the modern habit of compulsive beverage consumption, mass prescriptions to “drink 8, 8-ounce glasses of water per day,” phobias about salt and sugar, and turns them all upside down in classic 180DegreeHealth style. The objective? Increase the concentration of the extracellular fluid (the fluid in our bodies) for increased core body temperature (rise in metabolism), increased circulation to the extremities for warm hands and feet, and taking the burden off of the stress system for far-reaching health and hormonal improvements. The concept is extremely simple. The net sum of the food and beverages we consume can either concentrate or dilute our body fluids. 'Eat for Heat' discusses simple principles on how to make minor changes to your meals and drinking habits to keep your body in a better metabolic “zone” all day every day. It’s a tactic that can be applied to any dietary belief system, and can even yield tremendous health benefits to those eating just a regular Western diet. Everyone can benefit from the simple concept put forth in Eat for Heat.In terms of specific benefits from mastering this idea, you can expect to…• Eliminate frequent urination and waking up at night to urinate• Overcome frequent headaches, migraines, and seizures• Increase body heat and body temperature to 98.6 degrees F and higher• Improve or eliminate anxiety completely, stabilizing mood• Sleep deeper and longer, waking feeling more rested• Enhance immunity and increase the speed of tissue renewal• Eradicate heart palpitations• Moisten your skin and hair, especially dry skin around the hands and lower legs and feet• Eliminate dry mouth and excessive thirst• Lower LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides• Increase sex hormone production like progesterone and testosterone• Be able to eat whatever you want, when you want, without gaining fat• Strengthen bones and teethAnd more…

Ok, so this is the second book of Matt's I've read and I definitely think he has some good things to say. I don't mind his extremely casual style, although I could see where it would be annoying to some, particularly older folks. I also don't mind his lack of formal credentials, because let's face it, some of the worst shams in nutrition history were proposed by MD's, PhD's etc who clearly didn't know what's what (cholesterol is bad, salt is bad, all fat causes heart disease, etc.)I can absolutely get on board with his increase metabolism approach, and think he's probably right on the mark as far as that being the cause or contributor to many modern health issues. I've heard other authors say the same thing. His stance on hydration gave me some pause, and I'm still a little wary of it. However, I myself, a couple of weeks ago had a dry mouth and yet was urinating every couple of hours. I couldn't figure out how that could be. He explains it in the book. So, I'm cutting down on my water intake and using salt when I do drink it. I've been eating a ton of extra calories to increase my metabolism, get some body weight back (after losing 10 pounds at least on Paleo), and trying to get my low body temp up.I think one of the issues I have with Matt is in his presentation. He rarely cites specific studies or books (although he does have a bibliography at the end) so you are left wondering where he came up with that particular piece of info. Did he make it up? Did he find it somewhere else? We don't know.I also have an issue with his love affair with sugar. This guy LOVES sugar. He actually recommends drinking a coke with your lunch (along with all the other carbs you may be eating) and says at one point in the book that, for some people, drinking 3 or 4 cokes in a day might be more healthful than drinking a gallon of water. Sorry, that's where I lose him. Yes, drinking a gallon of water is excessive, but drinking 3 or 4 cokes in a day is simply insane. All that sugar and acid is in no way healthy. He needs to spend more time convincing readers why such excess amounts of sugar aren't harmful, rather than pointing out how they are helpful (in the very short term). And one of the biggest reservations I have about the sugar issue, is that in EVERY source I've read in the last 20 years, sugar is considered a stimulant and stresses the adrenals, similar to coffee. But Matt says it's exactly the opposite, that sugar and carbs actually calm the adrenals. He needs to spend some time proving that, rather than just saying it and expecting us to believe him. And quite possibly refined sugar could have a different effect on the adrenals than, say, white rice or oatmeal. He needs to address that.I'll continue to keep my eye on his work, but I think he needs to get a little more scientific in his presentation to really win me, and probably others, over.
